Dynamic Chapters: Join the Epilepsy International Mission

Epilepsy International drives global change through its strategic chapters, strategically positioned where our mission can make the most significant impact. Operating under the guidance of the Epilepsy International Main Office, these chapters are energized by their independent leadership system. Typically comprising a President, Vice President, and Secretary, working seamlessly with other dedicated members, these chapters orchestrate events, fundraisers, and much more! Our chapters unite curious students, dedicated advocates, esteemed physicians, and other inspiring individuals, fostering a vibrant community of passionate volunteers.

“I'm passionate about this organization because I know with our teamwork, our messages on Epilepsy, its prevention, and other vital information on Epilepsy would actually go far. With that, the rate of Epilepsy could gradually be curbed or minimized.”

Chapter Highlights

Muhammad Malami: President of Kontagora, Nigera Chapter

8 in every 1000 individuals in Nigeria have been diagnosed with Epilepsy, a prevalence of Epilepsy that is higher than that of most African and South American countries where Epilepsy is notoriously more prevalent. As the President of the Epilepsy International Nigeria Chapter, Muhammad is driven to educate, teach, and explore opportunities to give back to his community and raise awareness about Epilepsy. As an educator, Muhammad understands the importance of education in enacting change. Therein, education is a core principle and focus point of Epilepsy Internationals Nigeria Chapter! Through working to create change for Epileptics, Muhammad's goal is to lead Nigeria onto a pathway proper care is given to every Epileptic patient.

Rosemary Kariuku: President of Nairobi, Kenya Chapter

Rosemary first began her journey in helping Epileptics when founding Fahamu Epilepsy Kenya Initiative (F.E.K), a NGO dedicated to raising awareness and educating society on Epilepsy. She was inspired by a willingness to help society learn and prepare to help people suffering from epilepsy-related seizures. A teacher by profession, Rosemary believes that there are many struggles that Epileptic youth in Africa face, but those problems should not be a defining factor in their lives. She asserts the African youth needs education, skills, and modern technology as a doorway to the world of positive and impacting possibilities. This belief is why she is so passionate about the mission of Epilepsy International, and the values of education and positive psychology are what her chapter focuses on.

SÄMMŸ ÑDĘBË: President of Monrovia, Liberia Chapter

Liberia has one of the highest rates of Epilepsy of any African Nation, and yet the majority of patients in Liberia are not treated or are victims of misinformation about Epilepsy. As the leader of Epilepsy International-Monrovia, Sämmÿ is passionate about spreading Epilepsy International's mission in Liberia and combating misinformation with advocacy and research! In his free time, Sämmÿ enjoys playing football (American soccer), studying, and reading and learning new things. Sämmÿ is motivated to spread Epilepsy International's message to all parts of Liberia and help others understand the real science behind the condition.

Freedom Larbi: President of Tema, Ghana Chapter

Freedom is passionate about Epilepsy International's mission because "it will help in creating awareness for Epilepsy and help in finding its treatment to alleviate the suffering of those who are affected. Further, it will help remove the stigma associated with Epilepsy". Under Freedom's leadership, Epilepsy International - Tema has identified a variety of goals they are working towards: To identify those suffering from Epilepsy and bring them under one umbrella in Ghana and seek support for them, link them to places to seek help and advantage of opportunities available for them to seek help sufficiently, draw the attention of stakeholders to the plait of the Epilepsy patients, and help remove the stigma associated with the disease in Ghana.

Elida Vanessa: President of San Salvador, El Salvador Chapter

Despite the high prevalence and burden of Epilepsy in El Salvador, the country has few Epilepsy Specialists and poor resources to support those with Epilepsy. The country has less than ten EEG machines, making it very difficult for individuals to be diagnosed with Epilepsy, and as a result, leads to improper and lack of treatment for those with Epilepsy. As the president of Epilepsy International San Salvador, Elida understands the struggles Epileptics face as both her husband and son have Epilepsy (husband and son pictured). She is passionate about raising awareness about proper treatment and making sure people understand there are ways to treat Epilepsy. In her free time, Elida loves spending time with her family and playing sports with her family.

Kephas Omondi: President of Uthiru, Kenya Chapter

Having seen other Epileptics struggle in his community, Kephas is passionate about the mission of Epilepsy International because he doesn't want to see his fellow Epileptic friends suffer from a lack of treatment and targets of misinformation any longer. Kephas's chapter focuses primarily on advocating for youth and school-aged children with Epilepsy, hoping to provide the resources these students need at a young age. Kephas is a student at the University of Nairobi, and is passionate about public speaking and advocacy.

Naadozie Chijioke: President of Awka, Nigeria Chapter

Before becoming involved in Epilepsy International’s mission, Mr. John studied agricultural and environmental engineering at University, receiving high honors. Understanding the importance of education, Mr. John leads a chapter driven to educate their community about Epilepsy. Furthermore, Mr. John is going to break the bounds of knowledge and the unknown regarding Epilepsy care: Mr. John and his team are actively researching ways to reduce the prevalence of Epilepsy in Nigeria while simultaneously brainstorming ways to increase the treatment rate. Mr. John not only loves teaching but traveling across Nigeria too!

Emmanuel Kofi Sevor: President of Buduburam, Ghana Chapter

A public health nurse for KAAF University College in Ghana, Sevor has seen firsthand how his community frowns upon those with Epilepsy. Appalled that people with Epilepsy have such erroneous perceptions or that the myth that epilepsy is a bad spirit that easily spreads or infects others exists is why Sevor is passionate about the mission of Epilepsy International. Therein, Sevor's chapter focuses heavily on fighting misinformation in their community and trying to combat the negative stigma associated with Epilepsy.
